Texas CSA
Pension Applications
In
awarding pensions for Confederate service, Texas, like most other southern states,
confined its relief payments to veterans or their widows resident in Texas since 1880 who
were disabled or indigent. - those were the regulations, but you will find some that sorta
got around the "red tape"! The Texas Confederate Widow's Pension
Statute required that in order for the widow of a Confederate Pensioner to be eligible to
a transfer of his Pension after his, she must have been married to said Pensioner prior to
Jan 1, 1910. Texas did NOT confine its Confederate benefits solely to those who
served from Texas - you will see where many shown below moved to Texas during the post
Civil War period, and were here long enough to qualify for benefits. The CSA Pension
benefits became available in 1899 and continued to receive applications as of 1975.
LOST YOUR
ANCESTOR? Several times, I have found my "missing family" through these Texas
Pension Records - not under the veteran's name, but through his Widow's Pension
Application. Much more information is contain with the Application than shown below
- the best part - These applications are easily obtained! Visit the Texas State
Library and Archives Commission shown on my Texas Research Link or search the database
here or even better you can view a sample of an actual Veteran and/or Widow's Application.
Click and find
out more about the Index of
Confederate Pension Applications available through the Texas State Library and Archives Commision - Take a
look at Confederate Pension Fund Amounts
Received by Pensioners. Tip: Put in only the surname only when you search the database - it will pull up only the spelling you
insert, so be sure and re-enter an alternate spelling, especially for Andrews.

Terrell, Comptroller Ac.; Austin, Texas: Dear Sir: Your letter of 14th inst. with
enclosures received and I herewith return duly executed including Mrs. Andrews
application for pension, which I believe will qualify her as pensioner. Her husband
was for many years a prominent business man of our city, but late, too late to recuperate,
sustained reverse that left him penniless, hence became a pensioner. The homesstead
shown in application of Mrs. A. was inherited by her a few years ago from her father, and
not much as a divident earner, giving her shelter and a meager income from renting as
spare room or two. Should you desire further information Mr. J. W. Stewart of your
department can doubtless furnish it or prompt you where to get it, but if necessary, you
may call on me for it. Yours truly, A P. Fincey. - - (See Mark Henry Andrews -

Info: Widow's Pension #45782 - dated 25 June 1928 - rejected first review "The
Statute requires that in order for the widow of a Confederate Pensioner to be eligible to
a transfer of his Pension aftr his death, she must have been married to said Pensioner
prior to January 1, 1910. The application of Mrs. Jackson shows the date of her
marriage to have been January 29, 1910, and for this reason the application of Mrs.
Jackson is rejected." - Due to amendment of requirements pension was reviewed a
second time as per letter from Comptroller of Public Accounts dated June 24, 1929, and
advised that "in the next few days Mrs. Jackson will receive formal notice of
approval at which time affidavit will be forwarded to her to be executed.... Warrant will
be issued about August 31st". Sallie C. Barnes received little benefit from
her Widow's Pension in that on Nov 1, 1929 a MORTUARY WARRANT was filed due to her death
on Oct 26, 1929 at the home of her step-son J. C. (Jefferson Casey) Jackson of Eden,
Concho Co., Tx. signed by W. C. Weir, M.D. - - (See Francis M. Jackson Veteran) |
