Info. |
The 1846 poll list is the nearest thing Texas has to being a
complete census of the last days of the Republic of Texas. A "Poll" tax of
one dollar was applied to every white male resident over the age of 21 and to women who
were heads of households (usually widows - but not necessarily so). Variant
spellings are included.
ANDERS: JAMES,
Montgomery County; JOHN, Montgomery County
ANDRE:
NICHOLAS, Bexar County.
ANDREWS: C.K.,
Harrison County; ISABELLA; Brazoria County; JAMES, Polk County; JESSE, Shelby County;
JOHN, Jackson County; JOHN D, Harris County; LEWIS, Liberty County; MARY, Fayette County;
PAMELA, Fort Bend County; R. H., Galveston County; REDDIN, Fayette County; SAMUEL, DeWitt
County; SUSAN A., Fort Bend County; WILLIAM, DeWitt County; WILLIAM, Red River County.
From the early
Texas pioneers shown below, you will see that the list is far from being complete.
If your ancestor's name does not appear above, it does not mean he was not in Texas -
these elusive pioneers were great in being able to elude anyone trying to collect any type
of tax! Texas officially became the 28th state of the United States of America on
February 19, 1846.when J. Pinckney Henderson of San Augustine took his oath of office as
the first governor of the state. |
